About Carlo Viscontti
Carlo Viscontti is a Portuguese made-to-measure tailoring house, founded in Arganil, Serra do Açor. We design and produce every garment in our own factory — a 43-year-old manufacturing facility in central Portugal employing 180 skilled workers. We do not outsource. We do not work from templates. Every Carlo Viscontti garment is built from scratch, for one person, with their exact measurements and specifications.
Our positioning is simple: factory-direct, honest luxury. The same hands that make garments for international hotel groups, military contracts, and European corporate clients make your suit. The difference is that when you come to Carlo Viscontti, the garment is made for you specifically.
The Factory
AMMA 1981, the manufacturing company behind Carlo Viscontti, was founded in 1981 by Francisco Batista in Arganil, Serra do Açor, Portugal. The factory produces approximately 50,000 garments per year across multiple product lines, including luxury uniforms, bespoke tailoring, and made-to-measure commissions. In addition to Carlo Viscontti, the factory has supplied garments to clients including the French Army and leading international hospitality brands.
Arganil is located in the interior of central Portugal, in the foothills of the Serra do Açor mountain range. It is a region with a long tradition of textile craftsmanship. Our factory has grown continuously since its founding and today represents one of the most complete garment manufacturing operations in Portugal.
The Carlo Viscontti Brand
The Carlo Viscontti brand was created to bring the factory's production capability directly to the client. Rather than selling through intermediaries or department stores, Carlo Viscontti operates through a network of personal representatives in Lisbon, Coimbra, and Brussels. Each representative works by appointment, builds relationships over time, and carries fabric books from our mill partners so clients can make fully informed choices.
Our clients are professionals, business owners, and executives who value quality and fit above labels. Many have tried luxury ready-to-wear and found it wanting — suits that are expensive but not well-fitted, or made-to-measure services that charge premium prices for mediocre construction. Carlo Viscontti exists to offer a genuine alternative: real made-to-measure, built in our own factory, at prices that reflect production reality rather than brand mythology.
Construction Standards
All Carlo Viscontti suits are constructed with half-canvas chest construction as standard. This means the chest panel is built around a floating canvas layer — either horsehair or wool — that is hand-stitched to the fabric rather than glued. Over time, this canvas adapts to the shape of the wearer's chest, producing a lapel roll and jacket front that looks and moves naturally. Full-canvas construction is available at our upper price tiers.
We do not use fused (glued) construction on any garment in our range. Fusing is the dominant cost-cutting technique in mass and semi-mass tailoring and is the reason most suits lose their shape within two to three years of regular wear.
Fabrics
Carlo Viscontti works with cloth mills that have defined the global standard for tailoring fabrics. Our primary suppliers include Vitale Barberis Canonico (Italy), Dormeuil (France and UK), Reda (Italy), VBC, and Drago (Italy). We stock fabrics ranging from lightweight fresco and tropical wools for warm climates to heavy flannels and overcoating for winter commissions.
Showrooms and Appointments
Carlo Viscontti operates by appointment through personal representatives in three cities:
- Lisbon, Portugal — our primary market, with over 600 active clients
- Coimbra, Portugal — serving clients in central Portugal
- Brussels, Belgium — serving the European institutional and corporate market
We also attend trunk shows in other cities throughout the year. Contact us to find out when we will next be in your area.

Where Italian Wool Meets Portuguese Soul
The fabrics we use are mostly Italian. The hands that build your garment are Portuguese. The result is a suit that carries the quality of both traditions — and that was made specifically for you, by people who have been doing this for over four decades.
Quality first
We started making the products we wanted to see in the world and we did this with an uncompromising approach to sustainability.
Humble beginnings
Our story begins in a small shop with a small team. With nothing but passion and a dream our brand was born.
